Everyone including myself (save the United States government) seems to think that attacking Syria is a terrible idea. As I write this post President Obama is inching ever closer to a strike against Assad while Russia bolsters its naval forces in the region in an expectation of an attack against their ally. Not only that, Iran is also an ally of Syria as well as (secretly) China. France is supporting the U.S., but Britain has decided to stand down and not get involved this time. Protests across the middle east are occurring as far east as Pakistan, calling the U.S. a group of warmongers and, well, I would say that a majority of Americans are feeling pretty much the same way right now…or are still talking about Miley Cyrus.
The weirdest thing about all this is that this is exactly how my pre-history occurs (not Miley Cyrus) leading up to the events in my novel This Broken Earth. I am not writing this blog to make you go out and buy the book, but simply because I’m pretty freaked out about the fact that a prediction I made in my novel is slowly becoming a frightening reality.
In my novel, the U.S. does get embroiled in a war with Syria and the Russians do strike back which drags Europe and China into a world war. It becomes a nightmare scenario very quickly as the war drags on. The Russians or the Chinese hit Iowa with an EMP that completely obliterates the United States electrical infrastructure, shorting out every transformer in North America. A virus is released upon the world which wipes out over 1/3 of the global population because the land war obliterates a secret Russian germ warfare lab near Turkey. When the war finally ends because the U.S. becomes a 3rd world country and because of the massive death toll of the virus, Russia and China eventually turn on each other because of disagreements about the way the war in the Middle East is fought and oil rights. Because of this a nuclear exchange occurs that nearly turns the Middle East to glowing slag.
I hate to frighten you. I really do. How do you think I feel when I see something that I cooked up with my writer brain taking shape on the nightly news? It terrifies me. I know that this world (according to the Bible) is destined to get worse and worse, and there are some who think that this current conflict in the Middle East is the beginning of the end of the world, but I would like to put forth an observation made by Jacob, a sagely character in my novel, as something to think about:
“I’m sure the people who lived in the dark ages probably felt the same way. How about the people living during the black plagues that swept Europe? Do you not think that they assumed the world would soon end? Surely they did! As we look around us at the horrors that a final world war has brought, the devastation of an economic collapse, the abandonment of our government and the ravages of Volos, we must try to find some kind of peace in all of it, find some kind of hope.”
I think we can find some kind of hope. I hope we do. I pray for cooler heads in this situation, that they would stop lying to us about how much they care about all the people who were gassed by Assad and level with us about the fact that it all has to do with their “interests”…which is Americanese for “oil”. If we attack Syria in the next few weeks, then God help us all.

Writing Is Hard Work 
Interesting thought. I mean this in the most positive way possible: I hope you are not a visionary. An excellent writer is quite enough.
That is pretty damn scary! I think being far down on the southern tip of Africa, we feel a bit more safer than most, but are we really? I’m actually busy right now with a “What if?” post for who would side with who if things got really ugly…

Roger, you and I must have vastly different social graphs. I have not read a single article or personal opinion, save yours, that ‘attacking Syria’ is a good idea.
Although, I read the rest of your article, and you seem to be against attacking Syria. Maybe consider editing your opening sentence to reflect that?
