5 Blogs for Indie Writers

I receive weekly e-mails from Writer’s Digest who make massive money off of amateur writers everywhere through subscriptions to the magazine but more through the many costly conferences they offer.

But what if you are not made of money, and don’t like magazine subscriptions?  You are in luck.  There are several blogs I visit regularly who offer their information completely for free that every indie writer needs to frequent.  There are many more, and some of the people who read this blog should be included in the list, but the following five blogs are absolutely the top five as far as content, relevance and usefulness.

1. Copyblogger – If you blog (and you should if you are an indie writer) then this site gives the would be blog star the much needed information to make their blog the best possible tool for getting the word out about their writing. Blogs are highly important for any indie writer because they are the best way to build a following and to promote the next book.  This website is a manual for content bloggers.
2. Write To Done – This blog is daily posting articles about writing from some of the best writers in the business.  These articles help the would-be novelist who has not had the benefit of college level creative writing courses, schooling them in the subtle nuances of the craft.  It is searchable, and if you need some obscure advice about something that you think you will never find an answer, you will find it here.
3. Jane Friedman – Even though Friedman recently posted an article about why we should all stop blogging, I always find her articles thought provoking and cutting edge.  She gives great advice to e-book indie publishers and advice about the traditional publishing industry.  If you read her blog, be prepared to be slapped around by her logic.
4. Problogger – I have included two blogging advice blogs on this list because I think (sorry Jane Friedman) that the blogosphere is still valid and necessary to help indie writers get noticed, second only to Twitter.  This site gives even more excellent advice about maintaining a thought provoking blog that keeps readers interested and keeps them surfing back to your blog for more good content.
5. Writer’s Digest List of New Agents – One free service that Writer’s Digest offers is a list of new literary agents.  New agents are trying to build their client list up, so why not send them a query letter after following their submission guidelines?  I did that this month, perusing the list which documents the agent’s interests and how to submit to each.
